City and Guilds Exam Speaking and Listening

City & Guilds

Level 1 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life

Speaking and Listening

Candidates must take part in a discussion, an explanation or presentation, and a telephone call, on topics covered on the course.  These must be:

1.  a small group discussion (with 2-4 others) – 10-15 minutes.

2.  an explanation or presentation to a small group of people (2 or more) - 5-10 minutes.  You can choose a topic for this beforehand, and prepare notes which you can bring into the exam and refer to when you are speaking.  However, you are not permitted to read the whole explanation and you are not permitted to practise in class.

3.  a telephone call (role-play) with a tutor in a familiar or unfamiliar situation - 2-3 minutes.

The first part of the exam, task 1, will be recorded on a video camera.  All parts of the exam will be recorded on an audio voice recorder.

Exams will be marked by tutors.  Then they will be checked and marked by another tutor and, finally, moderated by the City & Guilds Examinations Board.

You will receive your results in the post.  We anticipate that this may take approximately 6-8 weeks.  When you pass, you will receive a letter from the college telling you how and where to collect your certificate.

Please make sure we have your correct address.
